Rising Phoenix sees value in the forest and the wonderful wildlife it holds. We set out to tackle the threats posed against Siem Pang, to rewild the forest and to secure long term funding of the Wildlife Sanctuary.

Birdlife International Cambodia

BirdLife International, Cambodia Programme

The site was first identified as an Important Bird Area in 2002 by BirdLife. Since then Birdlife has lead on the conservation work for the forest.

Working effectively with the government of Cambodia, birdlife have lead on biodiversity monitoring, initial law enforcement support and livelihood work with local communities that surround the reserve.

Rising Phoenix works with Birdlife in continuing conservation efforts of Siem Pang Wildlife Sanctuary.

On the 9th May 2016 the forest was designated and Prey Siem Pang Lech Wildlife Sanctuary by a sub-decree signed by Hun Sen the Cambodian Prime Minister. This designated a total area of 132,231 hectares of protected Wildlife Sanctuary under the management of the Ministry of Environment.

Rising Phoenix has a good relation with the Ministry of Environment. Rising Phoenix director have met with his excellency Say Samal, Minister of Environment on multiply occasions and look forward to working well with the Ministry of Environment in conservation efforts around the forest.

Tackling the threats

Rising Phoenix supports the law enforcement costs of Siem Pang Wildlife Sanctuary.

Preventing illegal wildlife hunting, logging and land encroachment within the Wildlife Sanctuary.

Ensuring the survival of the forest and wildlife, allowing sustainable benefits for local communities.

Law enforcement focuses on regular patrolling between three ranger stations located across the Sanctuary. Patrols are completed by motorbike, boat and foot. Rising Phoenix provides financial support to Ministry of Environment rangers, operation costs of the three ranger stations, as well as providing technical input on improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the law enforcement effort. Road development and the threat of illegal settlement remain major threats to the integrity of the site.

Re-wilding the forest

Most of the large mammals of the forest have been lost including elephant, tiger and large herds of wild cattle.

Rising Phoenix is re-wilding Siem Pang to ensure that key natural processes continue, maintaining a healthy forest.

Rising Phoenix takes a focus on the recovery of key species that are important for maintaining the forest.

Rising Phoenix has received a grant from Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund which launched its rewilding efforts at Western Siem Pang Wildlife Sanctuary. This grant provides funding for a development of a feasibility study which includes the creation of demonstration sites within the sanctuary. Rising Phoenix will develop a protocol based on their learnt experiences and use this in future work as well as for awareness raising for key decision makers.

Securing long term funding for the forest

Rising Phoenix is raising long term funds for the forest.

With the aim to guarantee site management funding for at least the next 20 years.

A tented camp has been established in the Wildlife Sanctuary for use by Rising Phoenix donors and guests.

Rising Phoenix aim to provide up to US$ 500,000 annually for the management of Western Siem Pang Wildlife Sanctuary, either directly or via a trust fund. This fund will be for exclusive use at Western Siem Pang Wildlife Sanctuary, guaranteeing the integrity of the protected area and the implementation of the site management plan.
